Growing Blueberries

Blueberries are one of the most popular farm products in Whatcom County. Our climate and soil seem to be perfect for growing blueberries and having them ripen in July (though I have a few that ripened mid-June this year).

Earlier this year, I picked up two small bushes from our local nursery and they are currently fruiting (I was worried they might be too young).

I had also tried sprouting blueberries from the fruit (some leftovers we had in the freezer), but unfortunately that didn’t work out at all. Even with the freezing (blueberries need a cold stratification step to simulate winter), I wasn’t able to get any sprouts. Maybe I’ll try again next year just to see what I did wrong.
